Bed Bugs

Color: Mahogany to rusty brown. Red after a blood meal.
Size: ¼ inch when mature
Habits: Live in cracks and crevices near host. At night they crawl to host and feed by sucking blood. Host seldom feels the bite. Fed bugs hide until they molt. Eggs are laid in harborages.
Habitat: In mattress seams and tufts, bed springs, head boards and any other crack or crevice in the room including picture frames, moldings, under carpet edges, etc.
Threat: They do not transmit disease but the bites usually itch.
Prevention: When traveling, consider bringing a large plastic bag in which to store your suitcase at night to prevent bugs from crawling into it. Check bed linens in the morning for blood spots which is a telltale sign of beg bug infestation.
Fleas

Color: Medium to dark brown
Size: 1/12 to 1/6 inches. Very flat side to side
Habits: Feed on blood from animals. Eggs drop off and fall to the ground. Larvae feed on excreted blood from adults and organic matter such as animal hair and skin scales. Good jumpers.
Habitat: Adults live on animals. The larvae live in nests of animals. Most common flea is the cat flea but it and other species live on dogs, squirrels, raccoons and other animals. Will bite humans but do not live on them.
Threat: Bites can cause itching. Fleas can transmit some diseases such as plague.
Prevention: Pets which roam outdoors can be treated by a vet to prevent fleas. Vacuum pet areas frequently and thoroughly to remove skin scales, hair and flea blood droplets. Keep lawn groomed to prevent rodent habitation.
Lice

Color: Pale brown
Size: 1/8 inch or smaller
Habits: There are three types of lice: Head lice, body lice and pubic lice. All three live on the host .Eggs are attached to body hair or to clothing in the case of the body louse. All stages take blood meals from the host. Lice do not survive for more than a few hours if they leave the host. Lice are transmitted through direct contact with infested individuals or their clothing..
Habitat: Head live are found on the scalp. Body lice are found on various parts of the body. Pubic lice are found din the pubic are and sometimes in arm pits and eye brows.
Threat: The body louse can transmit typhus, relapsing and trench fevers.
Prevention: Do not exchange clothing with individual who might be infested. If such contact is suspected, wash suspect clothing in hot water which will kill all stages including eggs. Obtain prescription from a physician. There is no need to treat the premises as lice do not live off the host.
Mosquitoes

Color: Varies
Size: 1/4 to 3/8 inch
Habits: Female mosquitoes such blood from warm blooded animals. Eggs are laid in bodies of water. The larvae feed on microscopic organisms and organic materials.
Habitat: Eggs are laid in stagnant water including ponds, bird baths, old tires, hollow tree stumps, etc.
Threat: Mosquitoes transmit various diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, encephalitis and canine heart worm.
Prevention: Remove standing water. Screen windows, doors and porches. Wear long sleeved clothing. Use insect repellents if out during mosquito activity periods.
Ticks

Color: Brown to dark red
Size: 1/8 inch or larger depending upon species and if engorged with blood
Habits: Ticks climb onto animals and humans. They seek out a feeding site and then bore their mouth parts into the victim and suck out blood. They then fall off the host and shed their skin or, when adults, to mate and lay eggs.
Habitat: Black-Legged ticks (Deer tick) are found outdoors in open wooded areas. American dog ticks are found in grassy areas. The Brown dog tick is an imported species and is found only indoors.
Threat: Ticks transmit Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted Fever and other lesser known diseases.
Prevention: Wear long sleeved shirts and pants and light colored socks to easily detect ticks. Tuck pants into your socks. Use insect repellent on socks and lower pants as protection. Inspect clothing and body when returning from tick-infested outdoor areas. Manicure lawns to reduce harborages.
