Cockroaches and Disease

Do you know that there are 69 species of cockroaches in North America? Only a few species infest structures and share life with a human. Identifying which type of cockroach is in your house will help you know how to treat it. Cockroaches reproduce best in warm conditions, particularly in areas where the temperature exceeds 70° F. Eliminating cockroaches is extremely important as they are a major carrier of many diseases to humans. As per the World Health Organization, wherever cockroaches go, they leave behind traces of their existence. Parts like feces or saliva carry special proteins responsible for allergic reactions in many individuals. Because roaches feed on human feces as well as human food, they can spread germs that cause diseases such as:

  • Dysentery
  • Cholera
  • Leprosy
  • Plague
  • Typhoid fever
  • Viral diseases such as poliomyelitis.

German Cockroach

Do you know that German cockroaches are the fastest to reproduce? They are the most common cockroaches infesting homes and buildings. The pest thrives in the presence of food, moisture, and warmth. Adults are light brown and about 1/2 inch long, with two dark stripes running lengthwise behind the head. German roaches reproduce very quickly, which is why controlling these pests can be difficult. The female usually carries the egg case until shortly before birth. The egg case is beige and about 7–9 mm long and has about 40 eggs. German roaches are most common in kitchens and bathrooms. Preferred hiding places include cracks and crevices under sinks and toilets, refrigerators, dishwashers, and stoves. Suspected of a German Cockroach infestation? Contact Environmina Pest Control today for fast and effective cockroach control services.

American Cockroach

Do you know that the American Cockroach is the largest roach?
This cockroach is measuring about 1 1/2 inches long.  It is reddish brown to brown, with a pale yellow band around the edge of behind the head. Adults have well-developed wings but seldom fly. American cockroaches reproduce more slowly than German cockroaches. These cockroaches prefer dark, moist areas, such as in basements and crawl spaces.

Oriental Cockroach

The oriental cockroach is a shiny black or dark brown. It is about 1 inch long.  Oriental roaches prefer damp dark areas. The females have very short wings. The males have wings that cover about half the abdomen. This cockroach lives in cool, dark, damp places such as sewers, crawlspaces and basements. Those roaches travel through sewer pipes and live on filth. A female oriental cockroach produces an average of eight egg capsules per lifetime. Each egg capsule contains about 16 eggs or so.

Brownbanded Cockroach

This species is far less common than the German cockroach but occasionally can be a problem in homes. The brown-banded cockroach is similar in size to the German cockroach but lacks the dark lengthwise stripes on the region behind the head. They can be found anywhere in the home other than kitchens and bathrooms.
